In her long awaited memoir she finally shares her side of all the stories we’ve heard from so many others. Immediately following the wedding the couple became tabloid fodder with their very public fights and drama, and Houston's use of substance escalated. However, the portrayal of Whitney Houston was not negative as in the most recent documentaries and biographies. For all Robyn’s concern about the leeches in Whitney’s life, her memoir portrays a similar lack of respect (and nuance) for Whitney in her later years. An intimate look into life of Whitney Houston through the eyes of her best friend and loyal assistant of 20 years.

It was a fascinating, quick read, very poorly ghost written but interesting to look at the rise to stardom, the effect of rumors about sexuality, a young, codependent relationship, and the sad descent into addiction and the people around Whitney Houston who enabled her addiction, rather than promoting treatment, for their own personal gain. Throughout the years Crawford has been approached by several publishers for her true story, and in sharing it, Houston's legacy can be understood in a manner that wasn't always possible. I felt very sad while reading this book because I just wish things could have turned out differently for Whitney. They are simply living their authentic lives as people today are far more tolerant and empathetic, which is so refreshing and shows as a society how far we have come and how archaic this world once was. I have always been a huge whitney houston fan I connected to her voice many years ago and followed her career to the very end.My take away from this book was deep down whitney didn't feel worthy of better relationships and sobriety. She adds, “If Whitney partnered with you, she didn’t try to do your job, she worked with you as a partner.

But I get a strong sense from Crawford that Whitney Houston was a force of nature, who knew her own mind, and who ultimately did whatever the hell she wanted to do. A Song for You ] is a story of becoming, of starting over and loving again, of healing in immeasurable ways that are both scarring yet beautiful. If only her entire family loved and cared for her; if only she hadn’t felt constrained by the music industry to hide her true self; if only she and Robyn could have been free?I didn’t know anything about Whitney besides her songs, but this books illuminates her life and trajectory as “the lucky one”.
