Anyone who finds the physical aspects tricky could help read the recipe and direct everyone else – it’s always useful to have someone keeping an eye on everything to make sure the team’s working together smoothly. To make the flour paste, mix the flour and water together in a small bowl until it’s a smooth paste. Eostre was a voluptuous blonde maiden, always depicted surrounded by little birds, bunnies and other baby animals, as well as spring flowers. Add the butter to a separate pan and place over a low heat for a few minutes, or until melted, then set aside.

Using this recipe, you would think I’ve made them a few times before because the results were amazing! If you are using the packets, you can just use 2 x 7 g sachets, that is 4 1/2 tsp which is slightly more than 1 tablespoon but it works just fine. For the day after, reheating makes all the difference to make them soft and moist again – 15 sec in the microwave! I forgot to baste the buns in egg wash :-( I also made a few changes that I think were worthwhile : 1.

Once cooled, with an adult volunteer, carefully take your Hot Cross Buns out of your Dutch oven and use safe cooking utensils to put them on a plate.

Whichever theory you wish to attach to your Hot Cross Buns, we can all agree these are the seasonal treat of the holidays. Tastes and looks just like the classic version (see above), except they rise marginally less (you can only tell if you have both side by side), and the dough takes longer to rise. When the hot cross buns come out of the oven, mix the sugar and 1 tablespoon of boiling water together for the glaze, and brush each hot bun to make them sweet and shiny. Remember to check for allergies, eating problems, fasting or dietary requirements and adjust the recipe as needed. The recipe for these buns remains quite traditional, apart from the roux of course, made with bread flour, a little sugar, spices, eggs, butter and dried fruit.Leave dough in the bowl, cover with a wet (clean) tea towel and place in a warm place to rise for around 1 1/2 – 2 hours. While your batter is resting, place the remaining flour, salt, mixed spice and sugar in a separate bowl. With the mixer still running add the butter and continue kneading until the butter is fully combined and the dough is, once again, no longer sticking to the bottom or sides of the bowl.
