They embark on a quest to unlock the puzzle of the map and; they hope; save the king and his people from darkness. Working with them on almost a day-to-day basis as a children's librarian, I did not doubt that my experience helped me to separate out the wheat from the chaff (so to speak).

Beyond the visual spectacle, the Journey Trilogy also celebrates the universal themes of resilience, friendship, and the boundless potential of imagination. Usually reading time is an Emma and me thing, but even Tita Cherry (my wife/Emma's aunt) got in on this one. As you explore the illustrations in the book, try to find features that might be clues about the rest of the story. Something you didn’t mention in your review is how the ending of the book points back to the beginning! There is an element of the steampunk aesthetic, especially in the myriad locks, bridges, ships, hot air balloons and strange Jules Verne-like flying machines that populate this world, as well as in the many smaller mechanical devices that involve pulleys, wheels, cogs, and levers. But when the girl’s cat reveals itself to have been sitting on a bright red writing implement (is it a marker, a crayon, or chalk? If a character is angry or scared, make sure that what they say reflects this, or add a ‘stage direction’ telling a reader how the lines should be delivered.

If you ever read my reviews, you know that I am not a big fan of wordless books (Bluebird being a prime example of my dislike). Although content in their temple high up in the mountains, Tiny Dragon realizes that something feels incomplete. Working with them on almost a day-to-day basis as a children’s librarian, I did not doubt that my experience helped me to separate out the wheat from the chaff (so to speak). A chase ensues, in which the girl’s father sees all the ingenious ways she’s learned how to use the chalk. It combines the bring-your-imagination-to-life aspect of Harold with the making-friends-in-magical-ways aspect of Barbara Lehman’s books (who’s probably my favorite wordless picture book illustrator).

Harold and the Purple Crayon is one of my favorite books ever, but that’s in spite of me, also, finding it creepy! To this day, his favorite destination remains his imagination, where he can often be found drawing secret doorways and magic lanterns. Having him be a kid of color who makes fast friends with the girl and joins in her adventure would only add to the wordless power of these books in displaying friendship, loyalty, and cooperation. Throughout the Journey Trilogy, Aaron Becker showcases his extraordinary talent for visual storytelling. Join Big Panda and Tiny Dragon as they set off on an extraordinary adventure in this companion to the global bestselling phenomenon Big Panda and Tiny Dragon.Look on a previous page and you can see the villain doing the same hand movement in his little airship, just with his fingers (some folks think his hand is a gun as well, but if you look you’ll see that the colors of said “gun” are the same as his arm, suggesting that this is just a very insistent pointer finger).

Color or lack of color convey a lot of meaning and the gorgeous illustrations offer much to explore.

A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure and danger abound.
