On the way, you'll unravel the mysteries of every type of mix processing, from simple EQ and compression through to advanced spectral dynamics and 'fairy dust' effects. Mike shares many of his own mixing tips, supplemented by tips and advice from some of the industry's top engineers that range from Chris and Tom Lord Alge to Andy Wallace. I would imagine most of our readers are familiar with the Mellotron, a tape-playing keyboard that became popular in the late '60s on songs like The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever. Each month, he does a "makeover" mix of a reader-submitted song, explaining his decisions and techniques in detail. At this point the edition I read is a bit long in the tooth (10 years old) which means that some of the details of technologies are dated, and the author sometimes cracks little jokes that I don't understand - I think they're probably hilarious if you're British, but my American mind doesn't make it there.

Mike Senior gives the novice the fundamental information necessary to understand and execute all basic mixing tasks as well as many advanced mixing ones. Vintage King co-founder Michael Nehra shares some of his love, knowledge, and practical advice for diving into the world of vintage audio gear, and then takes us behind the scenes for a walk through.

Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio is a down-to-earth primer for small-studio enthusiasts who want chart-ready sonics in a hurry. Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album Rumours sold over 40 million copies, topped charts around the world, and won a Grammy for Album of the Year. And though there's plenty of information to soak up, Mike has made it very easy to navigate your way through the book and to find the relevant information you need quickly and easily.

The book is interspersed with humor, which helps to mellow out the otherwise heady engineering lingo. Although there definitely is some very good info on those subjects in this book, he gives you absolutely NO idea how to apply those effects to any individual instrument. The final section comprises five chapters dealing with mix sweetening techniques, including the application of reverbs and delays, stereo processing and other effects, bus compression, and the use of mix automation.

Regular Sound On Sound readers will already be familiar with Mike Senior's contributions to the ever‑popular Mix Rescue series, as well as his occasional (and usually lengthy! I recommend this book all the time to audio professionals who are looking for a good resource for their students, and I recommend it to any hearty bootstrapping project studio operator who wants to make the best use of his time and money while laying a strong foundation for his future development. It won't give you fantastic mixes overnight, but it's likely to alter your perspective on at least some of the steps along the way and point you in the correct direction, enabling you to become a fantastic mix engineer if you put in the work. I’ve read it several times, and maybe I’m missing something, but he seems to say one thing, contradict himself, then contradict himself again? He includes quotes from many heavy-weight producers and engineers, and also mentions songs which demonstrate the techniques he's discussed.
