Description

Nvidia is trying to combat the appeal to cryptocurrency miners with the RTX 3060, though, with a combination of hardware and software to cripple its hash rate. It remains to be seen whether or not this will help keep the price of the card low, but we hope it does. Once this card starts seeing its price rise closer to the RTX 3060 Ti, its value rapidly diminishes. The RTX 4060 holds a power efficiency advantage, and a substantial one at that. The RTX 4060's efficiency is arguably the highlight of the card, while in the case of the RX 7600 it's a lowlight. A clear win to the RTX 4060 here.

Which one should you choose? That's tough. I'd go for the RX 6700 XT but only if you can snag it for a great price. The extra memory, bandwidth and shading power give it the edge, particularly at 1440p. But then there's ray tracing, DLSS 3 and Frame Generation. They can easily put the RTX 4060 ahead of the RX 6700 XT.The 1440p data is mostly more of the same: 10% slower than the 5700 XT and now 20% slower than the 3060 Ti. It matches the RX 5700 again, so it was 9% faster than the RTX 2070. The GeForce RTX 3060 is also Nvidia’s first desktop graphics card to support the PCIe Resizable BAR feature, following in the footsteps of AMD’s Smart Access Memory (which is based around ReBAR). Resizable BAR lets your CPU see your graphics card’s memory, rather than accessing it in 256MB chunks, which can result in performance gains on compatible systems. Most of those gains are modest, as we discovered testing Smart Access Memory on the RX 6900 XT, but they can go all the way to 10 percent or more in the right games, running the right graphics settings and resolutions. ReBAR’s uplift is highly variable. Nvidia

Which one should you go for? The RTX 4060 is cheaper, offers much better performance per watt and has the advantage of support for DLSS 3 and Frame Generation. Both have the same amount of VRAM. But the fact that we're even considering the RTX 3060 Ti over the RTX 4060 is damning in and of itself. Which of course, brings us to the present situation. At the moment, Nvidia has no incentive to make the RTX 3060 a killer value. Nvidia can still present this price point and sell as many cards as they can produce, evidenced by the fact that it sold out instantly. Even if the market returned to normalcy later in 2021 – something we're not expecting – Nvidia could simply refresh the 3060 series with a Super variant and adjust pricing to whatever is appropriate then. For testing we're still using the Ryzen 9 3950X test system as we progress on updating everything to be tested under the R9 5950X. Expect all that data once we get through this latest round of product releases. The test system is configured with 32GB of dual-rank, dual-channel DDR4-3200 CL14 memory. When compared to the RTX 2060, the 3060 was 13% faster when comparing native performance or DLSS-enabled performance. However, with ray tracing enabled the RTX 3060 was much more efficient, delivering up to 26% better performance. In Rainbow Six Siege at 1080p, the RTX 3060 is good for 292 fps, which makes it a little faster than the 2070 Super and places it roughly on par with the RTX 2080 and 5700 XT. It's some 12% faster than the similarly priced RX 5700, though that's not exactly progress.

The RTX 4060 retains its key advantages, including a massive power efficiency lead. The RX 6700 XT's nearly 100% higher TDP counts against it. The RTX 4060 also has a superior feature set including DLSS 3 and Frame Generation which - if supported by the game, will vault it ahead of the RX 6700 XT. With the RTX 3060, Nvidia is hoping to convince folks that have been holding onto their GTX 1060 to finally make the upgrade, claiming that the new card boasts double the performance. And, well, Nvidia is right. The full GA106 chip has 12 billion transistors, down from 17.4 billion in GA104. That shrinks the die size from 393mm square to just 276mm square, which not only helps to reduce the cost of the chip, but also increases the number of chips Nvidia can get from a single wafer — and if you're wondering, GA106 is less than half the size of GA102, which measures 628.4mm square and has 28.3 billion transistors. At an estimate, Nvidia can get around 130 dies per wafer with GA104 (some of which are defective, most of which end up as partially disabled chips), while the smaller size of GA106 allows for around 200 dies per wafer. More dies mean better yields and more graphics cards to go around. That's the hope.

The Ultimate Play

If you own a GPU from a prior generation, like the GTX 1060 or even at GTX 1070, then the RTX 3060 is a decent upgrade in terms of performance, but you'd be better off spending a little more on the Ti version or waiting to see what AMD does at this price point. tot 4K in 12-bits HDR bij 240Hz met DP 1.4a + DSC. Tot 8k in 12-bits HDR bij 60Hz met DP 1.4a + DSC of HDMI 2.1 + DSC. Met dual DP 1.4a + DSC, tot 8K HDR bij 120Hz The RTX 4060 is generally a match for the RX 7600 in traditionally rendered titles, but once you add ray tracing into the mix, the RTX 4060 pulls ahead, and that's before the gains it will achieve if you enable DLSS 3 and Frame Generation. AMD has an answer to that in the works, but until we see FSR 3 out in the real world, Nvidia holds the upscaling technology advantage. If your case has two expansion slots free and clearance for 242mm x 112mm (L x W) you’ll be able to fit a RTX 3060 Ti in. If I wanted to upgrade my current PC to an NVIDIA 3060 Ti, would it work with my current hardware?
