Description

I loved seeing Effie from a different point of view and since this book's focus is on Mhairi I was feeling a compulsion to reread The Last Summer to see what hints I had missed about Mhairi's life. I thought I had it all worked out at the end of the first book however this startling new story, set over the same time period, only from a different character's POV, left me with more questions and serious doubt as to my previous thoughts. A bitter winter in a harsh unforgiving land and a village that works as one; betrothals, secrets, death, superstitions, loyalty and friendships, The Stolen Hours is a must read.

The last third of the book felt a bit repetitive, it is the moment when the evacuation is mentioned - it feels a bit the same but also bit differently, told through different point of view. Powerful writing and a wonderful premise make this a novel you’ll simultaneously want to savour and race through. I loved it and can’t wait for the next in the series!' Jill MansellWhen word comes that St Kilda is to be evacuated, the lovers are granted a few months' reprieve, enjoying a summer of stolen hours together. Only, those last days on St Kilda will also bring trauma and heartache for Mhairi and her friends, Effie and Flora. And when a dead body is later found on the abandoned isle, all three have reason enough to find themselves under the shadow of suspicion . . . The previous book The Last Summer unlike Swan's usual happy ending finished on a cliffhanger after the death of a central character.

The author had my emotions all over the place. Tears and laughter were all there. I am eager to read Effie’s story so that I am clued up with her POV. I can’t wait for the rest of the series. I loved being a part of the St. Kilda community. Thanks to Net Galley and Pan Macmillan for allowing me to read an advance copy of The Stolen Hours by Karen Swan in exchange for an honest review. I’ve long been a huge fan of this author and having already read The Lost Summer, the first of the series. I was eager to dive into this book. My heart bled for Mhairi and all the heartache she endured. When things seem to go right for all her friends, she seems to be enduring more heartache and longing. She gave up everything, to be able to help her family, keep the peace in the community and basically give up on her own dreams. But she is fierce and she does what she needs for the people she loves.

Advance Praise

I was extremely excited to read this second book in Karen's Swan's series. The first showed what a departure it was from her usual stand-alone stories. However, the level of detail and evident research made that a compelling read.
