Santa Montefiore in 2013Gracie Burton is an unassuming widow, living independently with her two dogs and keeping herself busy by involving herself in various village activities in Badley Compton in Devon. She has a reputation for efficiency and for getting things done and is relied upon by the unlikely-named Flappy Scott-Booth, who sees herself as the self-appointed lady of the manor – for which, read busybody. Gracie claims to have led an unremarkable life and no one has any reason to disbelieve her – not even her nearest and dearest.

This is the third in the series about three Regency lords who manage a club called Temptations and how they find their loves, this one featuring Ramsay, Marquess of Sterling, the most strait-laced of the three, and Grace, the ward of one of the other two. Although both characters were introduced in previous books, this can be read as a standalone.

So...we have stoic, upright, uptight, society savvy, scandal avoiding Ramsey meeting Grace and there for her while trying to retain his bachelor status. He has to deal with ghosts of his childhood before he is ready to take on happiness and perhaps a bride but he is there for Grace throughout the book. There is an interesting twist to his past that crops up in that someone from his past, with a rather iffy reputation, shows up and causes a bit of grief BUT all comes right in the end and there is a HEA for Grace and Ramsey. AND as the epilogue is four years in the future I am guessing this is the end of the series. I wouldn’t mind reading a book about John (the butler who for Heathcliff and also at Temptation) and the housekeeper Mrs. Marilla – there is definitely a story about them either together or independently!

When the form of his temptation tempts him too far, it is up to him to decide whether his past be damned or not. Love is irresistible. Grace loves Ramsey, but she does not want to wait forever for him to propose. So the lady takes chances into her own hands. Risking the chance that Ramsey might feel the same way and take interest in her. Or let her fall into the hands of another gentleman. Ramsey is against the last option. Ramsey Scott, the Marquess of Sterling, has worked all of his life to avoid scandal, but it's finally caught up to him. Having already been married and then divorced has made him feel as if he's a failure. Still, when Ramsey's friend asks him to help with Grace, Ramsey cannot deny him. Unfortunately, Grace is being pursued by the enemy. Can Ramsey put a stop to it before it's too late? I very much enjoyed where the story was going here but for me it just didn't completely come together. The details weren't all there or it just wasn't given enough time to grow-I'm not sure which.Despite the fact that he utterly abhors scandal and is considered proper and uptight by his friends, Ramsey Scott, the Marquess of Sterling has scandal attached to his name. He's spent his life trying to live up to his father's ridiculous expectations of perfection and never believing himself to be worthy or good enough, especially after his disastrous marriage and subsequent divorce brought shame to the title. From the very beginning, I was absolutely in love with the portrayal of Gracie's social "club" friends in her community. There's a woman named Flappy who takes it upon herself to know everything about everyone first, and gives off the illusion that she is fluent in multiple languages, worldly, and well-read—none of which is remotely true. I loved the casual snarkiness of the narration that pokes fun at her and other women in their club. Even when the story shifts to Italy, there are occasional chapters that return to Flappy and her antics at trying to organize a funeral for a man in the community. These could have felt out of place and unnecessary, but I absolutely loved them. WINNER OF THE GOLDSBORO BOOKS HISTORICAL ROMANTIC NOVEL AWARD 2019, FROM THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLING AUTHOR Maybe I'm just a sap for slowburn. Maybe I'm just a fool for developed relationships founded in mutual attraction /and/ a cognitive connection. This is a relaxing read, perfect for long Summer days on the beach. The characters were well drawn and likeable, even Carina, who softerns as the book progresses.

There is the way Grace took matters into her own hands. She is a determined and smart woman not willing to wait a lifetime for what should be hers now. Unlike most women, Grace isn't sitting on the sidelines until a man saves her. She makes her own choices. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this historical romance novel.Gracie has been keeping secrets for over 40 years and it is only in the Tuscany sunshine that she lets her guard slip and begins to reveal her early life to her granddaughter.
