Description

lawyer firm, the result of a 2012 merger between Minneapolis' Faegre & Benson and Indiana's Baker & Daniels. ten US offices, as well as Beijing, Shanghai and London. The feature is written after analysing the trainees’ comments as a whole. We go with the consensus views, not lone-wolf comments. But be under no illusions: you will also be on trial, because in this ever more competitive market most firms (and some more than others) treat the vac scheme almost as a pre-screening exercise when it comes to handing out training contracts. A good example of a firm that relies heavily on its vac scheme is Mishcon de Reya, which recruits all of its trainees from people it sees on its placement. More and more firms are taking this approach and recruiting trainees only from their vac schemes. But this is not (yet) the prevailing recruitment model, and many firms who offer vacation schemes have no hard and fast rules about how many they will aim to recruit from them: some firms have just as many trainees who haven't done their vac scheme as those who have.

When on a vac scheme, become an anthropologist. Observe your environment and its inhabitants; figure out the social structures, the hierarchies, the shared values that bond people (if indeed there are any). Watch how the trainees fit in with all of this. Eavesdrop. You’ve got to be on your guard, though, because people will be conscious you’re there, and some of our sources did end up concluding: “It can be an artificial exercise – you see what they want you to see.” Your aim is to peer beyond the mask at the living, breathing, sweating entity behind it. Chambers UK-ranked for banking & finance, construction, energy and very finance-related areas. Ex-Bingham lawyers are chiefly finance/restructuring specialists. Until 1 July 2014 the term 'training contract' was used by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to designate legal traineeships. However, since 2014 it has begun using the term 'period of recognised training' and since its consultation on the SQE the SRA has started to use the term 'qualifying work experience'. However, law firms and the SRA confirmed that even after the introduction of the SQE the term 'training contract' will remain in use for the contracts entered into between firms and trainees. In addition, the actual nature of the training firms offer through their training contracts is unlikely to change as a result of the SQE, although it appears there will be some deregulation of the required elements of the training contract as outlined below. Silicon Valley headquartered firm with 10 US offices as well as Beijing, Shanghai and London. Nearly 900 lawyers worldwide. The overview of firms below is split into two sections. The first part lists US firms that have opened up an office London and grown it from scratch, while the second part lists US firms that have entered the UK market via a merger with an established British firm. There are significant differences between the two types, which we detail below. Bear in mind that certain firms in the second category had their own office in London prior to merger (sometimes well established).

As a law student on the precipice of entering the legal profession, it’s easy to feel like you’re about to plunge into shark-infested waters or amble innocently into a lion’s den, given the (often overblown) horror stories that stalk the hallways of universities. Irwin Mitchell’s trainees were keen to get the message across that their firm takes no such approach. “They talk a lot about the human touch,” one trainee mused, “so they have a real focus on people – I didn’t find it as intimidating as other firms.”
