Despite rapid developments in the category, Roomba's latest entry in the 600 series remains a good first model for newcomers because of its reliable performance and low price. That said, we highly recommend a lower-maintenance self-emptying model if you can stretch your budget; with the Roomba 694, you need to manually empty the bin at least every few cleaning runs. We test each robot vacuum cleaner by installing it in a typical domestic setting. The charging station is always placed in the same location, and the robot is given the same basic floorplan to clean, so we can see how elements such as navigation and speed compare between every robot we review. It’s a challenging floor plan that challenges even the smartest robot, with plenty of corners, tight spots, low furniture, surface changes and cable nests. How much you spend depends on your budget and your must-haves in a robot vacuum cleaner. As a rule of thumb, the more features and functions a robot has, the more expensive it will be. This doesn't mean that the performance you are getting with a robot vacuum will be any less, though. Do robot vacuums work on pet hair? All robot vacuums employ bumpers and sensors to help them navigate their way around your home and to prevent them coming to grief by falling down the stairs. But some are more efficient at finding their way around than others. While robot vacuums don't have crevice tools that work well down the side of your sofa or stairs, these machines usually have small brushes on the outside of their shells. The brushes do an excellent job of getting close to baseboards and ensuring that any crumbs or dirt on hard floors don't escape the vacuum's suction. However, as of yet, they can't clean the stairs.

The Roomba 694 is a worthy choice despite being iRobot's most affordable entry. In testing, it maneuvered obstacles just fine without advanced navigation technology and captured lots of dust and dog hair. Best of all, the robot offers slightly better battery life than its excellent predecessor, the Roomba 675. You can control the Roomba 694 via an app or your voice, including setting up scheduled cleanings. Who It's For Finally, we test how easy it is to set up, program, and control the robot. Some require only an initial battery charge, while others ask you to install side brushes and batteries. For connected bots, app design and reliable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi are major factors that impact your experience. The Eufy G30 Edge sits near the top of Eufy’s more affordable robot vacuum cleaner range. It balances a decent amount of power with 2,000pa of suction and a sensible price. We also found the robot vacuum tended to try and climb up low-lying furniture, while the customization of maps in the app wasn't as robust as we'd have liked. That said, it's still a great performing robot vacuum –although if you can live with slightly lower power, the same firm's cheaper D8 and D9 are very good too.Although it’s a good vacuum cleaner, it’s the mopping action that impressed us most. The robot uses two circular mop pads that rotate at 180rpm, which gives the mop more cleaning power than rival robots, most of which simply wipe the floor as they pass. Unfortunately not. Due to their design, robot vacuums cannot move up and down stairs but they are ideal for cleaning individual rooms, flats and single-storey homes. Stair cleaning will be need to be left to your regular vacuum. The Robit V7S Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is one of the more powerful robotic vacuums on the market. It provides an impressive 2,000 Pascals of suction, which will clean up just about any mess. Not only that, but the brushes are also well-engineered. And with extra sets of brushes, you can always replace them when they start to wear out. The dust hopper is also well-engineered. With a capacity of 0.6 liters, you won’t have to worry about changing out your dust bin.

Robot Vacuums Are a One-Way Ticket to Clean Floors - GQ The Best Robot Vacuums Are a One-Way Ticket to Clean Floors - GQ

As much as we love our four-legged pals, we don't love cleaning up their hair or the messes they make. So we really like this Roomba, which excels at cleaning up after your pets. We consider pet hair, too. Using the real thing sourced from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, our expert grinds it into the carpet to create a worst-case scenario before putting each vacuum to work.iRobot is one of the most respected names in the robot vacuum market, and the Roomba i3+ EVO is its most affordable model with a self-emptying dustbin. It's hard to overstate the advantages of this feature. Beyond offering greater convenience than their more manual counterparts, self-emptying robot vacuums significantly limit your exposure to dust, a big plus if you suffer from allergies. The i3+ EVO offers 10 times the suction power of the entry-level Roomba 600 series, and in testing did a good job of removing dirt from hard floors and carpet. This model also boasts smart mapping capabilities, so you can send it right to specific rooms by phone or voice for targeted area cleanings. Who It's For

Many robot vacuums cope well with hardwood floors and carpeted areas, but if your home has many staircases, you’ll need an additional vacuum to clean the stairs. With many robot vacuums suitable for programming from your phone, you’ll be able to switch these devices on when you’re out and about and come home to clean floors. How much does a robot vacuum cost? The main difference between this Eufy and pricier robots – including ones from the same brand –is in the software. There's no app control or integration with smart speakers, and it doesn't take the same logical path around the home when cleaning as other more expensive Eufy models do. Sometimes it’ll go in straight lines and sometimes seek out the edges of a room, while on occasion, it’ll travel in circles, which means it may take slightly longer to clean the whole room or floor. We also found that it wasn't always great at moving around objects such as deep-pile rugs, piano pedals, and pet food bowls. We test robot vacuums in our homes, with the following categories in mind: battery life, navigation, obstacle avoidance, the setup process, and suction power. If it supports Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, we also evaluate the app experience and other smart features. Some premium features are missing, though. Unlike pricier robots, the G30 Edge doesn’t use LIDAR to scan its surroundings and build up a persistent map of your house. Instead, it creates its internal map from scratch each time it goes out, using basic sensors to detect walls and obstacles. In short, yes. Robot vacuums can be more expensive than upright or cordless vacuums. Still, you’re paying for the added convenience of not having to do the vacuuming yourself and worry about how often you should vacuum. Robot vacuums are an excellent solution for busy people who don’t have time to put the vacuum around. Still, they offer a good alternative for those with mobility issues because all you need to do is switch them on.If you're looking for a robot vacuum on a budget, the Eufy 11S is worth considering. It has a reasonable price and that price is often discounted, so you’ll be hard pushed to find a rival that's such good value for money.
